Boat Designing, Making and Testing

What a great day we had being able to test our boats in the school pool.
After much discussing, designing, planning, making and modifying we were able to go and test the boats to see if they floated.
We decided they needed to be able to float for 5 seconds
to say 'they floated'.

.............planning..........

.....designing    and    making....

ready to go and test
Oh my goodness, look how many classes came to watch us.
almost ready for the launching...so exciting!

MARITIME MUSEUM VISIT

WOW....what an exciting day.....off to visit the Maritime Museum. We saw heaps of interesting things on the way there...big buildings, heaps of cars, cranes, diggers,  and the darkness in a tunnel.

Emma our teacher for the day met us. First we tried to make a boat float with tinfoil, then tested it to see if it managed to still float, holding blocks of plasticine in it.
One group's boat managed to hold 6 blocks of plasticine!

The next part of the visit was the boat trip on the Ted Ashby out into the harbour. Like true sailors we helped put up the sails.  Some of us even pretended we were pirates!
Ahoy me hearties!

The next part of the trip was to explore the museum.  So much to see and so much to try our hands at.   We met a man who made model ships, learnt a bit about Sir Peter Bake, stood inside an old sailing ship, turned ships wheels and much, much more.

A big thank you to our lovely parents who came with us. We hope you enjoyed the day too.

Floating and Sinking -Experiment #2

Today we were SCIENTISTS again......
predicting, observing and evaluating.

This time we tested tinfoil....
first going through the process of making a shape which would float,
....then the same process of trying to get our piece of tinfoil to sink.
Our recording sheet

and tomorrow Friday the 10th........we are off to the Maritime Museum to find out more about floating and sinking.  We are SO EXCITED!!!!!
Finger crossed the weather will be OK for our boat ride.
What this space!

Aidan's boat

Aidan designed and made a boat from recyclabable materials. He shared it with us.
What a clever boat designer and boat builder. He said " ir floats because it is made out of pkastic and there is air in the middle of it. It is not dense."

We love you Mrs Southwell !

FLOATING AND SINKING

During Inquiry we have been investigating what
SINKS and what FLOATS.
We have been thinking like scientists.......
predicting, observing, testing and evaluating.

We used plasticine and moulded it into a shape.
First we made a shape to get it to sink...then made a new shape
to try and get it to float.

Check out if we were successful.

         Yay,   I did it!!!!

WASTEWISE ....... WASTEWISE

Today Ron from Wastewise came and talked with us about which buckets to put our rubbish into.  We played a game and sorted items into three groups.
We did really well at sorting the items into the correct places.....
    composting, recycling or landfill.
